Based on the best-selling 2012 novel by Derek Cianfrance, “The Light Between the Oceans” is set to be released in theatres on September 2, 2016. It is a post World War I romantic drama. The main characters are a lighthouse keeper and his wife who are living all alone off the coast of Australia. When they follow cries in the night, they find that a baby girl and a dead man have washed ashore in a life boat. They rescue the baby, but are faced with decisions. Having faced the heartbreak of infertility, Isabel Sherbourne insists they take in the little girl as their own child. Husband Tom is reluctant but finally agrees to the longings of his desperate wife.

They name the girl Lucy and live happily in seclusion in the lighthouse. However, challenges arise as Lucy grows older and the family travels to mainland Australia for the first time in many years. Through a troubling encounter with Hannah Roennfeldt, Tom and Isabel realize that the effects of their decision could have been much farther and deeper reaching than they could have imagined.

Isabel Sherbourne is played by actress Alicia Vikander, who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2015 for The Danish Girl. Tom Sherbourne is played by Michael Fassbender, whose character portfolio includes big leads such as Steve Jobs and MacBeth. Hannah Roennfeldt is played by Rachel Weiz, a Hollywood favorite since her big break in The Mummy in 1999. Others in the cast include Caren Pistorius (Adult Lucy), Emily Barclay (Gwen Potts), Anthony Hayes (Vernon Knuckey), Leon Ford (Frank Roennfeldt), and Benedict Hardie (Harry Garstone). The film is produced by David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford and is directed by the author Derek Cianfrance.
