Sometimes you try on a lipstick that makes your skin tones, face, and eyes, come to life. This is it!  But then you decide to experiment with another that is almost the same as this one but it makes your face look washed-out and tired. Why is that?  Well, it has to do with your undertone.

What is undertone?

In simple terms, your skin's tone is what you say your skin color is (ivory, light, medium, tan, dark, etc.). The undertone is the color that is underneath the surface.  So, you can have the same tone as somebody else but a different undertone.

Classification of undertones

Undertones can be cool, warm, or neutral. These undertones can be broken down like this:

  • Cool (pink, red or bluish undertones)
  • Warm (peachy, yellow, golden undertones)
  • Neutral (a mix of both cool and warm undertones)

How to tell my undertone?

Check your veins

Look at the veins on the inside of your wrist.  If they look bluer, you are more likely to have cool undertones.  If they look greenish, then you are warm.

Old Jewelry Trick

Try on both silver or gold jewelry.  You will be able to note which one makes you glow, look radiant, and look awake. We are not talking about which one you like best but which one makes you look the best. Cool undertones typically look better in silver metals, whereas warm undertones look better with gold.

Hair and eye color

You can also use the natural coloring of your hair and eyes to determine what your undertone is.  Cool people have blue, gray, or green eyes and have blond, brown, or black hair.  Warm people usually have amber, brown, or hazel eyes with strawberry blond, brown, red, or black hair.
