Trailers for “The Martian” have been released and fans of the novel are getting excited! Based off of The Martian by Andy Weir, the science fiction movie starring Matt Damon is set to hit theaters in early October 2015.

The novel was released and self-published in 2011. It tells the story of NASA astronaut Mark Watney who was thought to be dead by his crew after a storm on the Red Planet (Mars) and left behind. But, Watney survives and finds himself stranded alone on the hostile planet with just 31 days worth of supplies; he grew vegetables where nothing grows and somehow succeeds in sending a signal to earth that he is alive. NASA sets mission to bring him home.

Production and Filming:

In March 2013, 20th Century Fox optioned the film rights and hired screenwriter Drew Goddard to adapt and direct the film.

Starting and Releasing:

Filming began on November 10, 2014 in Budapest. The film is set in Southern Jordan at Wadi Rum, an iconic landscape used in films as far back as Lawrence of Arabia.

The film is scheduled for release on October 2, 2015 in 2D and 3D. It was originally scheduled for release on November 25, 2015 but Fox announced that it would be moving the film up to October.

Expectations:

The Martian is expected to be the next Gravity/Interstellar, which earned $716m/672m on a budget of 100/165 million respectively.
